Seasonable guide

Schedule of garden works is affected by type of ground, orientation, altitude and many other conditions such as type of soil, nearby water source, wood, field, rock etc. In this case take these advices only as directory information. Factual date for work at your garden I'll tell you after my non-committal visit...



JANUARY


- green evaluating
- felling trees and shrubs

- at non-frost days we can pick up grafts
- snow collected from paths and patios can be used as protection for frost-sensitive plants
- on sun-exposed patches use netting to protect evergreen plants from direct sunlight
- scramble of compost is difficult at this time, but most useful
- don't let fish ponds and garden lakes get completely ice overed
- pot plants stocked in cellar clean-up of decayed parts and ventilate cellar regularly
- at snowy days flick away snow from fragile plants
- check stakes and ties
- repair and prepare tools and eqiupment for incoming season
- radical trees pruning



FEBRUARY


- pruning fruit trees/shrubs such as pome and soft fruits
- inspect newly (at autumn) planted plants
- strong back pruning of some types of hedgerows (Ligustrum sp., Crataegus sp., Carpinus sp.)
- care for pot plants such as cuting down and refilling soil in pots
- formative and pollarding pruning of trees
- grafting and cuttings preparation
- don't let fish ponds and garden lakes get completly ice overed
- advance working for heathers
- if weather is disposed, remove frost protection from pre-spring perennials and rock flowers
- coppicing and radical prune of most shrubs
- water evergreen plants if possible
- advance working for small garden architecture
- on sun-exposed patches use netting to protect stillgreen plants from direct sunlight

MARCH
